Embarking on a Data Science Journey: Meet Tharun Kumar Bottlapally

I'm Tharun Kumar Bottlapally, and I am thrilled to share my journey, experiences, and aspirations in the ever-evolving field of data science with you. Born and raised in India, I currently find myself in the vibrant city of Charlotte, North Carolina, where I'm pursuing my passion for Data Science and business analytics at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

My Academic Path

My journey into the realm of data science began with a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science & Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Hyderabad, where I developed a solid foundation in computing and technology. However, my thirst for knowledge didn't stop there. In August 2022, I embarked on a new adventure by enrolling in a Master’s program in Data Sciences and Business Analytics at UNC Charlotte. Here, I have not only maintained a perfect GPA of 4.0 but also immersed myself in a range of subjects from Applied Machine Learning to Visual Analytics and Strategic Business Analytics. This broad and intensive coursework has equipped me with the tools and knowledge necessary to tackle real-world data challenges.

Professional Experiences

Beyond the classroom, I've had the opportunity to apply my skills in diverse roles. As a Research Assistant at UNC Charlotte, I've processed and analyzed over 1 million tweets using advanced NLP techniques, contributing to significant advancements in online privacy and security. My role as a Teaching Assistant allowed me to share my knowledge and passion for data with others, fostering a collaborative and engaging learning environment. Before my academic pursuits in the USA, I gained valuable industry experience in India, working as a Member Technical at ADP Pvt. Ltd. and a Program Analyst Trainee at Cognizant Technology Solutions. These roles honed my technical skills and taught me the importance of teamwork, continuous learning, and adaptability.

Technical Proficiencies and Projects

I pride myself on a diverse technical skill set, including proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, R, and web technologies like HTML and CSS, among others. My work with databases and tools like MySQL, SQL, Tableau, and Power BI has enabled me to turn raw data into insightful, actionable information.

My project portfolio reflects my passion for solving complex problems and my knack for innovation. From developing JARVIS, a data mining robot, to leading the development of a dynamic pricing model for Uber and Lyft, each project has been a step towards mastering the craft of data science. These projects not only showcase my technical abilities but also my leadership and teamwork skills.

A Glimpse into My Achievements

My academic and professional endeavors have been recognized and rewarded through various accolades. Notable achievements include a publication on Job Shifting Prediction using Machine Learning, being a grand finalist in the Smart India Hackathon, and securing top ranks in competitions like the Student Data Fest and Women in Data Science (WiDS) Datathon.

As I continue on this exciting path, my goal is to leverage data science to make impactful decisions and drive innovation. I'm particularly interested in exploring how machine learning and analytics can be used to solve pressing societal and business challenges.
